CATERPILLAR PEST ATTACKS CROPS IN NORTHLAND

In some areas of the Whangarei district caterpillars have again made their appearance and are attacking crops and pastures. Farmers in the Mata and Ruakaka areas report that their maize crops are being stripped by the pests, which have appeared in the past few days since the heavy rain. Officers of the Agriculture Department, said it was probable that the Whangarei district was having the first visit from caterpillars this autumn because of the heavy rain at the week-end, whereas other areas did not get the fall. It was probable that as the rain developed in other areas so would the caterpillars, as was usually the case in Northland during the autumn.
