Motorists Protest Against Higher Price For Petrol

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. After expressing their concern at the increase of Id in the retail price of petrol, members of the executive of the South Island Motor Union at their meeting last evening decided to ask the North Island Motor Union to join them in protesting'against it.

It was also decided to write to the Australian Automobile Association, asking for information about petrol prices in Australia. Mr G. Hamilton said that only meagre details had been given to explain the increase. The cost of petrol overseas was said to have gone up. He thought that every motorist would feel as the executive did. The increase had happened at a time when motorists were trying to get the wartime petrol taxation reduced. The companies themselves did not know what the price of petrol was, said Mr H. D. Broadhead. They simply had it invoiced to them at a certain figure. Mr Hamilton: We do not expect an increase, with the rotten petrol we are getting now. The quality would come back to normal when the companies took over, said Mr F. W. Freeman.
