WATER SHORTAGE: RESTRICTIONS AT WESTPORT
Steps to conserve its depleted water supply have been taken by the Westport Borough Council following the long dry spell experienced in the Buller district. As a precautionary measure, the council will enforce a reduction of water pressure from 8 o’clock each evening to 6 o’clock the following morning. While causing a minimum of inconvenience the restrictions are expected to save a good deal of water. In the event, of an outbreak of fire during the night, full pressure will be restored immediately. It is reported that never before in the history of the Buller district has there been a shortage of water equivalent to that being experienced at present. Many pastures have dried up so much that they have almost reached the stage of being parched, while streams are at a record low level. Small ponds have ceased to hold water and creeks have been reduced to a trickle.
