McLachlan S.M. after he had heard from a defendant in a maintenance action in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth to-day that he had been married not long after his discharge from a.sanatorium and had been threatened with a recurrence of tuberculosis, while he had been out of work for months and had been unable to keep up maintenance payments. Mr. McLachlan added that it seemed a pity that there was not some provision to deal with applications for marriage licences under such conditions, but that might come with more enlightenment. When either health or finances were unsatisfactory it was bad enough, but when both were bad it was chaos.

Parliament to Meet in June Parliament would meet in June, the normal time, said the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) in Wellington .yesterday. The Scott Memorial Essay, a competition among primary school pupils on the West Coast, has been won by Ngaire Intemann, of the Grey Main School. The subject of the essay was “Gold Mining in Westland.”

War Memorial.. A meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council employees last evening appointed Messrs. J. Griffen, J. Barrow, and H. Bassett to represent the General Labourers’ Union at a public meeting called by the Mayor, Mr. F. A. Kitchingham, to consider a suitable war memorial for the district.

Lewis Pass Road Open. Although it is necessary for vehicles to ford Boyle’s creek, the Lewis Pass road is now open for traffic. Following the damage to the bridge when a lorry fell through the decking on Tuesday a ford was prepared and will be open to all traffic between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily until the bridge is repaired. Outside of those hours, drivers will have to make the crossing at their own risk. It is . expected that the repairs to the bridge will be completed by Saturday evening. Harbour Board Donations.

An unusual number of requests for donations were received by the Greymouth Harbour Board at its meeting last evening and all were successful, although the final decision in the case of the Greymouth Fire Brigade’s application for a grant towards its 80th anniversary celebrations on April 26 next was deferred for a month. The following grants were made:—Harbour Board employees’ picnic fund, £2; Waterside Workers’ Union picnic fund, £2; Greymouth branch of the Plunket Society. £5; Greymouth Surf Club, £lO.

Support for R.S.A. The proposal of the Greymouth branch of the Returned Services’ Association that the Greymouth war memorial should take the form of a R.S.A. club room, theatre, and hall, with the provision of a scholarship, will be supported by the Greymouth Harbour Board. The board decided this'last evening when an invitation was received from the Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) to attend the meeting to be held on February to discuss the war memorial. Messrs. J. B. Kent, W. Steer, and F. Williams were appointed the board s delegates to the meeting. Several members expressed the view that the R.S.A. opinion should be respected and that the association’s proposal was a good one.

Brief Court Sitting To-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth was the shortest for a considerable time, several of the civil cases on the list oeing settled before the court opened, while adjournments were aken in other cases. Mr A. A. McLachlan SM. presided. On the information of Mr A. Lane, Transport Department inspector, Robert Lockhead, who did not appear, was fined £l, with 10/costs for driving a trade motor vehicle, without being the holder of a driver’s licence. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil debt cases.—Stratford, Blair and Co. Ltd. v - C. M. Mathieson, £6/12/7, costs £l/ 8/ , Brown Walters and Co., Ltd., v. L. M. Mathieson, £22/9/1, costs £4 4/6. The Greymouth races at Omoto on Saturday and Monday next start at noon. —Advt. About twenty fresh horses will be running at Omoto on Saturday and Monday.—Advt.
