HOKITIKA “DISGRACEFUL STATE”
[ CONDITION OF CEMETERY CRITICISED (0.C.) HOKITIKA, This Day. The Westland County Council at ; its meeting yesterday decided to draw the attention of the Hokitika Borough Council to what members considered was the “disgraceful” state of the Hokitika cemetery, and to invite the Borough Council to send representatives to the next county meeting to discuss the question of maintenance. It was stated that the County Council pays £l5O a year to the Borough Council for the upkeep of the cemetery. Mr. E. Cook made a protest against the lack of post office facilities in his district (Arahura), and the distance country people had to travel to bring their children to centres for school dental clinic attention. He also referred to the fact that the school children in the Kokatahi-Koi-terangi district had not been invited to the civic reception to the Gover-nor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg) in Hokitika recently. It was pointed out that the matters complained of did not come within the council’s jurisdiction. Exception was taken by members to a letter from the West Coast branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association, which suggested that buses be prohibited from using the narrow road between Milltown road junction and Hans Bay, Lake Kanieri. Councillors expressed the opinion that the people who used the buses could not as a rule afford a car and should not be prevented from enjoying the beauties and amenities of the lake in order to make the road safer for people whose circumstances allowed them to own cars. Concerning the medical examination of applicants for motor-drivers’ licences, it was decided, on the mo- , tion of the chairman (Cr. M. Wai- ( lace), that the council recommend to ( the authorities that before an apph- ( cant be turned down on the exam- ( ination of one doctor, that doctors j opinion be endorsed by a board of ( two doctors. <
