SCHOOL BUS WANTED

GREY MAIN COMMITTEE TO ACT AVOIDING TRAFFIC RUSH The question of a satisfactory bus service from the school to Karoro was discussed at length by the Grey Main School Committee at its monthly meeting last evening and. it was finally decided that the chairman, Mr. P.C. Thomson and secretary Mr. L. F. Anderson, should approach both the Karoro bus proprietors and the Marist Bros School with a view to making satisfactory arrangements to meet the requirements of _ both schools. The committee’s aim is that the children should be away from the school prior to the noon traffic rush. It was also reported that the traffic lines in front of the school had been recently painted and the headmaster was of the opinion that similar lines should also be painted across the streets at both back and side entrances to the school. Mr. Thomson.presided at the meeting. Others present were Messrs D. S. Binnie, J. Bruerton, C. N. Gunn, A. L. Jamieson, L. F. Anderson, N. Shallcrass, N. A. Kilgour and J. Graham (headmaster). It was decided that the chairman and Mr. Binnie represent the committee at the forthcoming public meeting to be held in the Borough Council Chambers in connection with the proposed War Memorial. The Headmaster reported that 33 new pupils were enrolled at the beginning of the year. He was pleased at the spotless appearance of the school due to the efforts of the caretaker. The headmaster also favourably commented on the improved condition of the school grounds. The probationary assistants for the year are Miss R. Dewar and Mr. N. T. Smith. Miss C. Blair is relieving in place of Miss O’Brien who resigned in October last.

The secretary was instructed to communicate with the Canterbury Education Board and obtain six new blackboards and also new linoleum for the main entrance of the school. The chairman reported that the returfing of portion of _ the school grounds had been practically completed by the Public Works Department and that the work of levelling the school lawns was also receiving attention by the committee. The appearance of the school grounds was now much improved. An inspection of the interior of the school was also made by the chairman and secretary together with the works foreman and several repairs and repainting of blackboards were agreed upon. The treasurer’s balance showed a satisfactory credit and accounts amounting to £4l/16/- were passed for payment.
