USE OF PUBLIC FUNDS FOR TRANSPORT WASHINGTON, Feb. 10. The United States Supreme Court, by a majority of five to four, has ruled that public funds raised by taxation may be used for the transportation of children to Catholic parochial schools. The Court was called upon to rule on the question of what it takes to constitute the “establishment of religion,” which is forbidden by the Constitution. The majority opinion declared that no person can be excluded from the benefits of social or public benefit legislation because of his religion. The dissenters held that transportation payment contravened an amendment of the Constitution which prohibits taxation of a citizen for the support of beliefs he opposes.
