Native Scott Gets Lucky Run On Rails

[SPECIAL TO STAR]

CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. Native Scott won the President’s Handicap, the principal event at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington to-day, after receiving a lucky run on the rails in the last furlong. Captain Morant took over the running soon after the start and for the greater part of the journey’ he carried on from Margaret Hall, Cameronian, Native Scott and Jack’s Son, but half a mile from home, while the order of the field was practically the same, Cameronian was at the back of the field. He put in a brilliant run round the field and in the straight he challenged the leader. Under pressure Captain Morant eased away from the rails and through the opening shot Native Scott, who got up on the post to beat Cameronian by a head with the fast-finishing Gold Peg in third place just ahead of Margaret Hall, j Jack’s Son and Captain Morant. J V. Alborn, owner-trainer-driver of Native Scott, repeated the perform-| ance with Nationalist in the Aviation Handicap. Nationalist and Tall Timber went away from the field in the early stages and when Tall Timber, broke Castigate and Firewater joined' issue. Bancor, Frank Scott and Cas- i tigate all broke at different stages, and when it came to racing over the; last two furlongs Firewater had no' chance with the leader, who scored his first win for more than two years. I It was a very poor race, Firewater being the only one outside the winner to show any solidity. Above the Average. Maudeen, a good-looking four-year-old filly by Grattan Loyal— Queen Maud, showed herself a pacer above the average when she won the Advance Handicap, the result of which might have been affected when : a bad smash occurred going out of the straight the last time. Emily Volo made the early running from! Blue Revue, Hal Derby, Maudeen,' Highland Dale, Peter’s Pal and Admiration, but passing the stand the last time Maudeen was leading from Highland Dale, Emily Volo, Blue Revue and Hal Derby. Here Highland Dale came down and in a flash horses, j drivers and sulkies made a tangled heap on the ground. Checkmate, His Excellency, Lyceum, King High,: Peter’s Pal and Ace of Diamonds all fell while the remainder were interfered with. This left Maudeen, Hal Derby and Blue Revue in front, with Swaledale making up ground.! Maudeen won easily from Hal Derby: with Swaledale, who paid nearly a score, in third place. 1 Rangefinder scored a well-deserved, win in the Strowan Handicap. He was first away from the barrier but soon surrendered the lead to Scot- ■ tish Star and Tungsten Steel. Scot- I tish Star made the running until three furlongs from home, when Golden Game, Sahara Queen and Mountain Hall came fast. Rangefinder took the lead in the straight, and hard driven he went on to win well from Mountain Hall, Sahara Queen, which finished very fast, Coral Princess and Tungsten Steel. The winner paid more than a score on the win machine. Reefton Horse Placed. The Reefton-owned Horatio Nelson, with Jackie Guy and Terry O’Shea did most of the pace-making-in the Harewood Handicap but all, had had enough three furlongs from: home when Mareeta ranged up and quickly put. the issue beyond doubt.' Jackie" Guy hung on to gain second place but after the race the stewards met and decided to disqualify Jackie Guy for the race because of interference and to reduce the licence held by A T. Fairbairn to D grade until May 8. Horatio Nelson was then awarded second place with Right Royal third and Paddy Potts fourth. Horatio Nelson is owned and trained by S. C. Griggs at Reefton. I In a great finish Lady Ngaio got up in the last few strides to beat Lyndale in the Wigram Handicap by the barest of margins after the judge had called for a photo-finish. Certainty took over the running at the end of five furlongs and led into the straight from Lady Ngaio, Lyndale, Northern Lass and Stirling Castle. In a fighting finish Lady Ngaio held on gamely I’o gain a narrow win from Lyndale and Ben Adam. _________

Sir Michael gave a grand exhibi- : tion of pacing to beat a good class i field in the Farewell Handicap. He ; was in front from the start and in ■ the early stages was followed by . Loyal Nurse, Safety Pin, In the Mood, : Cameronian and Gold Bar. Cam- ; eronian put in fast, work in the . straight but Sir Michael held on gamely and won comfortably by two . lengths from Cameronian, who in . turn was a length in front of the fasti finishing Haughty, which recorded | the good time of 2.36 1-5 for third place.
