ATHLETICS Canterbury Senior Titles.

West Coasters In Minor Places Two former national junior champions shared the sprint honours at the Canterbury senior championship meeting held at Lancaster Parle on Saturday, D. R. Batten was outstanding of the two competitors, and won both the 100 yards and 220 yards titles with ease, while K. O. Plunkett won the 440 yards event in good time. A number of West Coast senior athletes competed at the meeting, but were’ unable to annexe a title, though several minor places were filled. The 100 yards was won by D. Batten in 10 2-5. with Plunkett second and C. Steel (formerly of Greymouth) third. K. Davidson (Hokitika) qualified for the final but was unplaced. Batten was again successful in the 220 yards in 23 1-5 and C. Steel was runner-up. K. Warren, of Hokitika, secured a third placing in his heat. There was a close finish to the 440, Plunkett winning in 50 3-5 from S. Lemon (Ashburton) and A. J. Atkinson (Christchurch). T. Harker (Greymouth) was second in his heal of this event but was unable to contest the final. . J. Fitzgerald (G/rdymoitth) was third in the mile won by J. C. Daly with M. R. Craighead second. The time was 4.35 2-5. After being second in his heat of the 440 yards hurdles, T. Harker (Greymouth) was narrowly beaten by D. R. Kinley in the final which was run in 59 3-5 secs.

The shot putt event was won by D. Herman with a putt of 41ft sins, D. Gibson was second and E. G. Walker (Hokitika) was third. J. Perrin was second in the hop, step and jump event won by M. Carr who covered 43ft 3i- inches. Carr also won the discus throw with 114 ft 10i inches. A. D. McKenzie was runner-up and J. Perrin was third. J. Borla'nd won the high jump with sft 9ins, and the pole vault (10ft). D. Herman won the hammer throw (137 ft Sins.), and D. Gibson won the javelin throw (146 ft 7ins). D. Dephofl, a junior, won the long jump from M.' Carr with a jump of 20ft 10? inches. W. R. Wilkinson won the 830 yards in 2min., and J. R. Clarke again won the three mile event in 15min. 43 1-5. J H. Borland won the 120yds hurdles in 16 3-5 while J. S .Williams was the winner of the 220yds hurdles m 26 3-5. R. H. Delaney won both the mile and three mile walks from R. C. Brown.

Australian Invitation To Harris And Agate (Rec. 11.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 10. The New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association is negotiating to bring the champion New Zealand runners, D. M. Harris and R. Agate, and the American sprinter, Don Campbell, to Sydney for the State championships which will be held at Easter, probably on, the Sydney cricket ground. The secretary, Mr. B. C. Day, said that an agent in New Zealand had reported that the prospects of engaging the three runners were bright and that he expected they would announce their decisions this week. The association was anxious to get the. best runners possible to meet the Australian champions, John Treloar and George Campbell. The Victorian champions, John Bartram and Jack Stevens, have already promised to compete.
