TURKEY AND THE WAR
EVIDENCE OF VON PAPEN’S ACTIVITIES NUREMBERG, February 6. Paul Rengers, a German air pilot, gave evidence at the trial of von Papen before the denazification court that von Papen “intended to bring Turkey into the war against the Allies.” He declared that von Papen, as ambassador to Turkey, undertook this campaign when Germany invaded Russia in 1941, but dropped it after the German defeat at Stalingrad when he was convinced that Germany had lost the war. Rengers said he flew from the Western Front to Turkey telling Turkish and German officials that he had made a forced landing. He had ample opportunity to observe von. Papen’s policies. Rengers described himself as “an enthusiastic anti-Nazi.” He works for the American Military Government.
