NEW LAND FOUND

BYRD’S DISCOVERIES IN • ANTARCTICA NEW YORK, Feb. 6. Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd has reported from Little America that his expedition has discovered a new South Polar coastline about’ 2500 miles long and a hitherto unknown continental area of 125,000 square miles, containing eight mountain ranges. Rear-Admiral Byrd also disclosed the discovery of a plateau in Adelie Land 9600 ft high and of major importance. He said he believed it-was the edge of the world’s greatest inland plateau and the Polar ice cap there was estimated to be a mile and a half thick. Discussing the expedition’s military aspects, Rear-Admiral Byrd ’said a tremendous amount was being learned about air, sea, and land operations under the world’s worst conditions. He hoped such experiments would continue because the I Antarctic was more rugged than the Arctic, averaging 50 degrees colder.
