GREY COUNTY ROADS

NO MAIN HIGHWAYS DECLARED THIS YEAR BOARD’S LACK OF FINANCE . No roads in the Grey County.-will become main highways this year according to information. received by the Grey County Council this morning when the Main Highways Board reported on its annual review. The board stated that it was with deep regret that it could not recommend the declaration of any additional highways at the present time. It had been, the desire of the board to act in the interests of motorists and assume the control, of more roads, but the expected increased grant had not been forthcoming. All existing revenue was required for the present system without adding to the board’s liabilities, the report concluded. ' Cr. R. Clark presided at the meeting, and. also present were Crs. J. Ryall. M.L.C., W. Fisher, F. Donovan, T. G. Jamieson, J. Ryan and A. McDonnell. _ The acting-engineer, Mr H. E. Higgins, reported that he had supplied two pipe culverts to Mr Williscroft, of Maruia, following his complaint that his access road required repairs.-—This action was endorsed. Road in Bad State Mr E. F. Perrin, Maori Gully, wrote complaining of the state of the road, from Waimea Creek. He stated that cars could not travel past the creek and cycling was impossible ir wet weather.—The acting-engineer stated that the road had not been maintained because no traffic had been using the route. It would take £4O to clear up the mile of road requiring atten-tion.—-The matter was left in the hands of the engineer. '. A grant of £5 was made to the funds of the Moana library. ■ ■ The Inangahua County Council wrote seeking the council’s support for the move to have legislation introduced making the spotlighting of deer an offence.—lt was decided to defer consideration until the chairman presented a report on the legal aspect of. the situation. _ A request for a donation to, the Greymouth Fire Brigade, to assist in the financing of the 80th jubilee celebrations, was held over until it was known what was required by the brigade. Ngahere Complaint A complaint was received that two men engaged in sawmilling in the Ngahere district had threatened i.o wire up the gates at the ends of the Try Again road, which was used for stock-droving.—lt was stated_ that the road was a County thoroughfare and could not be closed. —It was lei., to the engineer to take action if further complaints were made.
