MINISTER CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS 18 MONTHS’ SERVICE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 5. A call is to be made immediately for volunteers to relieve members of the New Zealand Army now serving in Japan. This was announced this evening by the Minister of Defence (Mr. F. Jones), who said that the Army component of the New Zealand Occupation Force in Japan was due for relief this year. ‘■The Minister said the basis on which volunteers would be invited to serve would be a total period of service of 18 months or discharge before that time. The Royal New Zealand Air Force Squadron, of about 300 officers and men, was also to be relieved. It was expected that all the original members who had spent almost 12 months in Japan would be relieved very shortly.
