THEFT OF WALLET
WITNESS IN CASE ADMITS CRIME (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. During the trial in the Supreme Court to-day of Henry Hedley Bryant Maunder, aged 33, a labourer, on a charge of the theft.of a wallet containing £ll from a fellow guest at a New Year party, a witness called by the defence, Leslie Scott, who is at present serving sentence in Mount Crawford gaol for the theft of a fur coat, stated that he, not Maunder, stole the wallet. Examined by Mr. G. C. Kent, for the defence, Scott said he had not seen Maunder before, but had been separately advised by his own solicitor about the matter. He admitted a list of 40 convictions in the past 13 years. To Mr. W. R. Birks, for the Crown, Scott admitted that he was awaiting deportation to Australia as a prohibited immigrant. “Not much more can be done to you in New Zealand,” said Mr-. Birks. “I don’t know,” replied the prisoner. The jury is considering its verdict.
