Visiting Woman’s Fine Run

New West Coast Record Equalled, The women’s West Coast 100yds record which was established at 12 secs, only last Saturday when Miss D. Perrin, of Greymouth, at the Mahar Cup contest, clipped one-fifth of a second from the long-standing record of 12 l-ssecs, was equalled by a visiting athlete at a club meeting at Victoria Park last eveningThe runner responsible for this fine performance was Miss J. Shaw, of South Canterbury, who sprinted splendidly from the scratch mark towin narrowly from Miss L. Williams to whom she conceded an eight yards start. Only one watch registered the time so that Miss Shaw’s performance will not be officially recognised, though the merit of the sprint was increased by the fact that Miss Shaw ran into a head wind and without the assistance pf running shoes. Miss Shaw, who. was credited with equalling the New Zealand women's 50 yards record last year, was also successful in the women's 75yds sprint last night and the women’s long jump. As Miss Perrin did not qualify for the final of the women’s 75yds and did not start in the 100yds, the visitor did not meet the West Coast champion. There were other fine performances at last evening’s meeting, T. Harker and J. Fitzgerald, who will be contesting the senior 440yds and hurdles and the senior mile and halfmile respectively, at the Canterbury championships on Saturday, winning in promising times.
