PEACE TREATIES Will Jugoslavia And Italy Sign?

(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 4. The Foreign Secretary, Mr. Bevin, to-day signed the peace treaties with Italy, Rumania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Finland. Mr. Molotov has already signed the treaties and Mr. Byrnes all except the Finland treaty, with which the United States is not concerned.

The real interest in the signing of the five satellite peace treaties, states the London correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association, is centred upon whether or not Italy and Jugoslavia will agree to complete the Italian treaty. The Italian Government has already protested because none of its recommendations were embodied in the final draft and the Jugoslavs have not in any way modified their objections and their refusal to sign which they announced at the conclusion of the Paris Con’erence, . ; ; LTjm

■ In London it is realised that unless Jugoslavia agrees to sign the Italian treaty it will be difficult to put the statute of Trieste into effect. Although Mr. Bevin, Mr. Byrnes and Mr. Molotov have now signed all of the treaties with which they are concerned, the offidi&l signing and completion does not take place until Monday, when the drafts are due to be completed in Paris. On this occasion, the British ' Ambassador in Paris,.Mr. Duff Cooper, will sign for Britain, M. Bidault for France and the diplomatic representatives of the United States and Russia for their countries. It is still not known in London whether. Italy is sending a delegation to Palis to sign the' Italian treaty and there is no indication from Belgrade about the attitude of the Jugoslavs.
