Mrs F. J. Nott and Miss A. Nott returned from Christchurch this morning. Mr. J. B. Kent (chairman) and Mr. S. W. J. Trotter (engineer) will leave to-morrow for Christchurch where they will represent the Grey Electric Power Board at a conference of South Island power authorities. Mr. G. R. Harker, chairman of the Greymouth Borough Council’s gas committee, and Mr. A. J. Fairmaid, engineer, left yesterday for Christchurch, where to-day they are attending the Dominion Gas Conference. The funeral of Mr. S. B. White, of Lydia street, Greymouth, took place this afternoon. The services at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and at the graveside at Karoro cemetery were conducted by the Rev. J. Silvester. There was a large attendance. Members of the Westland District Progress League stood in silence at last evening’s meeting as a tribute to the memory of Mr. S. B. White. The chairman (Mr. W. D. Taylor) said that Mr. White had been closely connected with the league’s activities and that he had been well known as a public-spirited citizen. The retirement of LieutenantColonel J. H. Sharp, 0.8. E., who was throughout the war Director of Supplies and Transport, was announced to-day by the Minister of Defence (Mr. F. Jones). Colonel Sharp will go on retiring leave at the end of this month after 35 years’ service with the New Zealand Regular Forces. — (P.A.) The Director-General of Agriculture (Mr. E. J. Fawcett), accompanied by his wife, will leave by Pan American clipper for Washington on Thursday. Mr. Fawcett will attend a meeting of the executive committee of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations in Rome on March 2. He will also attend trade talks in Geneva and London. —(P.A.)

The appointment of Mr. N. L. Vickerman as chief engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board, in succession to the late Mr. D. Holderness, superintendent and engineer, was approved at a meeting of the board. Another important staff change was that announced by Mr. W. R. Golden, traffic manager and chief wharfinger, who gave notice of his intention to retire at the end of April. Mr. Vickerman has been on the board’s staff since 1910, and has been assistant-engineer since 1925. Mr. Golden has been with the board since 1907, and was appointed traffic manager in 1919.— (P.A.) Walton, of Blaketown, wno was 80 years old yesterday, was met by a large number of friends who gathered at his home last evening. Representing the many organisations with which Mr Walton had been associated, those present included Superintendent T. Mclntosh (Grey Fire Brigade), Messrs J. B. Kent (Fire Board and Surf Club), A. Tyler (Fire Brigade), D. Hoggarth (West Coast Rugby Referees’ Association), F.-Costello (West Coast Swimming Centre) and W. Messenger (Grey Yacht Club). . All joined with other friends in extending best wishes to Mr Walton, while during the evening Grey Yacht Club representatives presented, him with an honorary member’s badge. ■
