REEFTON NO RAIN FOR TWENTY-THREE SUCCESSIVE DAYS

(0.C.) REEFTON, Feb. 4. Reefton to-day had its twentythird day without rain, and although a thunder-storm developed late on Monday afternoon and rain fell at Black’s Point, only one mile away, Reefton had only a few scattered drops. There was a light fall of rain below the Reefton saddle, and the dust on the roads was laid for a few hours. PERSONAL. Mr. and Mrs. J. Turvey (Palmerston North) are visiting relatives at Reef ton. n . Miss M. Buist has left for Christchurch to enter the Teachers Training College. CAPTAIN R. Fd. KEARNS TO RETURN Mr. and Mrs. Kearns, Reefton, have received advice that their youngei son, Captain R. S. D. Kearns, who has been in England for almost seven years, will return home shortly on furlough. Captain Kearns, who was seconded for duty with the British Overseas Airways Corporation after service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has for some time been chief pilot of Lancastrian machines operating on the London-Australia air route. He will be accompanid by his wife and daughter. Captain Kearns was born at Reefton, and was educated at the Reefton District High School and Canterbury University College. He attained the rank of squadron leader in the air force and gained the D. 5.0., D.F.C., and D.F.M. He is the third former pupil of the Reefton District High School to gain the D.S.O. Lieuten-ant-Colonel N. S. Shepherd and the late Lic-utonant-Colonel W. S. Austin, both of the First N.Z.E.F., were the other two.
