OPERA HOUSE: Finally to-night: “Radio Stars on Parade” and “Close Quarters.” Commencing to-morrow: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan in “To Have and Have Not.” With all the power of a riptide and for sheer brilliance of pacing, the newest drama-packed .film, “To Have and Have Not,” commences at the Opera House to-morrow, with a cast headed by Humphrey Eogart and supporting players including a newcomer, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan, Hoagy Carmichael, and Dolores Moran. It is a love story of independent souls, living at the brink of danger, loving every moment of the way. It is the tale of Harry, “Steve,” Morgan (Humphrey Bogart), a drifter and floater, and “Slim” (Lauren Bacall) a sloe-eyed, blonde, who found in his arms the love she swore did not exist. It is also a saga of the island of Martinique, picked dean by greasy political fingers, and of lives that burned behind drawn shutters in its only haven, “Frenchie’s” second-rate hotel. Skipper of a powerboat, Morgan, for the love of a woman, runs a dragnet thrown around the island.
REGENT THEATRE! Finally tonight: “Out of This World,” with Eddie Bracken, Veronica Lake, Diana Lynn. Commencing tomorrow: “Our Vines Have Tender Grapes,” starring Margaret O’Brien, Edward G. Robinson, James Craig.
Margaret O’Brien is back again, teamed with Edward G. Robinson in a gripping and tender story. Robinson has a completely new type of characterisation, sympathetic, warm and understanding, as Margaret O’Brien’s father. This is a true-to-life drama, peopled with true-to-life characters. James Craig is just right as the young editor of the local newspaper who is Margaret’s strongest ally; Frances Gifford is fine as a new schoolteacher from Milwaukee who cannot become accustomed to the small town; Agnes Moorehead plays Robinson’s wife in a down-to-earth fashion, and Jackie “Butch” Jenkins is one continuous delight as Margaret’s cousin and playmate. “Our Vines Have Tender Grapes” is ( full of drama and humour and entertainment. Truly this is the kind of picture which has ‘so many award-winning possibilities that it is hard to select any one person or any one thing for individual praise. Supports include “Passing Parade,” . Traveltalk and latest news. .
