LAWN TENNIS American Pair Beaten at Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Dec. 4.

The greatest shock of the Victorian tennis championships was the defeat to-day of the American Davis Cup pair, J. Kramer and E. Schroeder, by J. Bromwich and C. Long in the semi-final of the doubles championship. The Australians won 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Bromwich was the outstanding player, the uncanny accuracy of his shots amazing his opponents and the gallery. He did not lose a service. His placements were beyond criticism and he did not make more than a dozen errors throughout the match. At times he covered three-quarters of the court and, to the amazement of Kramer and Schroeder, returned shots which they thought were going lor outright winners. In the other semi-final, the Americans G. Mulloy and W. Talbert beat Adrian Quist and G. E. Brown, 10-8, 6_4 8-6. Earlier in the day Quist and Brown eliminated F. Parker and T. Brown (U.S.A.) in the quarteifinal, 7-5, 6-3, 8-10, 10-8.
