LONDON POST
AM ER 1 (JAN AMB ASS A DOR APPOINTED WASHINGTON, December 3. Mr Truman announced that Mr Oliver Max Gardner has been appointed Ambassador to London succeeding Mr Averell Harriman. Mr Gardner has been Under-Secretary to the Treasury since February. He is a wealthy textile manufacturei. and was Governor of North Carolina from 1929 to 1933. Mr Gardnei, who is a Democrat, is 64. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says that Mr Gardner’s Appointment as Ambassador is significant. The move to have in Labourite Britain an articulate and expert advocate of American Democratic capitalism is indicative of the belief that British and American foreign relations and many joint problems rest more than ever on an economic rather than a political base.
