REEFTON COAST FIRE BRIGADES

DEMONSTRATION OPENING TO-MORROW (O fc.) REEFTON, December 5. The West Coast Combined Fire Brigades’ demonstration will open at Reefton to-morrow when firemen from all parts of the West Coast will arrive at Reefton. The visitors will be welcomed officially by the county chairman (Mr. J. J. Coghlan) at the band rotunda, Jubilee Park, at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow, following a procession of firemeh through the main streets of Reef ton. The Inangahua Silver Band will play the procession through the town. Following the official welcome the annual meeting of the West Coast Fire Brigades’ Association will be held. . *“ On Saturday the demonstration will be held. Twelve teams will compete and the programme will occupy all Saturday morning and part of the afternoon. A procession will be held on Saturday afternoon, and in this there will be decorated vehicles, floats, bicycles and prams. Prizes will be awarded for several classes. There will be a programme of sports for children in the afternoon. On Saturday evening the visitors will be guests of the Reefton Brigade at a social, at which the trophies will be presented. The trophies for the demonstration are as follows: Arthur Rose Challenge Cup (two men coupling)- Grogan Memorial Shield, Rus-sell-McLeod Shield; Thompson Memorial Shield; Hislop Camel Hose Trophy; Benyon Memorial Cup; Powley Memorial Cup; Otira Citizens’ Cup; Clarence McKay consolation trophy; West Coast Fire Brigades’ Demonstration Cup. In addition to these trophies for the teams there have been donated by Reefton citizens 10 gold medals for contest among team members. Following a request from the Reefton Brigade to the Prime Minister’s Department for a visit from the national film unit for the Demonstration, the organising committee has now been advised that the cameraman and equipment will be in Reefton for the demonstration. The unit will also film other items of interest m the Reefton district. Special train arrangements have been made for Saturdays, and other transport has been arranged for country areas. The shops in Reefton wtlj close for a short time to-morrow night to enable staffs to attend the official welcome. By a special arrangement with the Department of Labour the shops will be open on Saturday fiom 9.30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
