KUMARA MONTHLY MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was held on Thursday. The Mayor (Mr. W. Stewart) presided. Others present were Crs. W. McNab, C. Haines, J. Gilbert, C. Evenden, R. Spiers, F. Rudkin, W. Lawrence, and J. Murphy- , . Cr. J. Hamer, who is a patient in the Grey Hospital, was granted three months’ leave of absence. It was resolved that a letter be written to him from the council wishing him a speedy recovery. Several applications for loads of gravel would be attended, to next week, it was decided. It was hoped to have the council’s lorry working again after receiving repairs. Mr. W. Case and Mrs. McFarlane, Kumara Hotel, were granted building permits under the usual conditions. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr. S. Case requesting the removal of crates of iron which have 'been stacked on the footpath against his shop, pointing out the liability of the council if any pedestrian was injured through their presence on the footpath. It was decided to inquire as to the prices of hose for the Fire Brigade and to have additional sumps sunk in appropriate situations in the town. The . council decided to ask the Main Highways Board to declare the road from the Taramakau bridge to McGrath’s corner a main highway. It was resolved that the Railways Department be asked to allocate two seats for Kumara and surrounding districts each night on the Christchurch railcar.
It was further resolved to communicate with the New Zealand Railways engineer, Greymouth, about the bad state of the road approaches at the Kumara railway station. The council decided to ascertain from the superintendent of the New Zealand Fire Brigades the position in respect to the motor pump at present on loan to the Kumara Fire Brigade. 1
