SPORTING Impressive Victory by Double Cross

Derene’s Sprint Success Avonbridge Wins Again at Orari [SPECIAL TO STAR.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 21. ' Features’ of the successful meetjng conducted by the Geraldine Racing Club at Orari to-day were the two successes gained by Di. M. G. Louisson and his trainer, C. Emerson with Double Cross and Avonbridge, and the smart performance of Derene. Double Cross was sent out a solid first choice for the Geraldine Cup and had an impressive win. He disputed the lead with Burberry and High Ideal to the home turn where he drew cut and led into the straight from High Ideal, Pedantic, Honest Sal and Authentic, with Amorlad moving up from last place. Honest Sal put in a characteristic finishing run but could not make much impression on Double Cross. Amoilad was finishing on into third place half a length in front of Authentic with Pedantic, Forage, Burberry and High Ideal following. Whitley, with a 31b allowance, was sent out the shortest priced favourite of the day in the Squatters’ Handicap, but after being slower than usual to move off he was never closer than in fourth place and finished sixth. Derene was out clear after a furlong had been covered and she had a big advantage entering the straight from John o’ London, Montezuma, Lady Fane, Whitley and Grill. Derene did not concede any ground in the run home and won decisively from John o’ London, with Montezuma a close third.. There was a gap to Grill, with Lady Fane, Whitley and Grand Forest following.

Avonbridge Wins Again. Foreign Ways, Hot Foot and Cloud Song led from the early stages of the Belfield Hack Handicap to the home turn, where Avonbridge and Mister John went past them and the two last-named led into the straight from Tomahawk, Cloud Song, Springwater and Botany. The two leaders had a close tussle throughout the run home, Avonbridge always holding a slight advantage and winning by a narrow margin. Botany, after a rough passage for most of the way, put in a telling iun over the closing stages to gain third place from Tomahawk, with Wee Mac Belfort and Wildfire next and Hot Foot in last place. Mister John was one of the last to leave the barrier and his effort was very cieditable. Tomahawk was the last to get away and he also did well.Foxspear was sent out first choice for the Rangitata Hurdles but was soon out of the contest as he lost his rider through getting on the heels of another horse before the first fence. Bank Raid and Big Top carried on in front after the first half mile and led to the home turn from Montello d’Oro, with Courtdress and As Required next. Montello d Oro headed Big Top before the last fence and although challenged strongly by As Required held on to win well. Big Top weakened into a close third placing with a gap to Courtdress, Bank Raid and Battle Chief.

Denim Opens Account. Because of the big field lor the OhaiJi Stakes, there was a scramble for earlv positions and several horses, including the third .choice, Palomino, were soon out of the contest. The early leaders were Lord Robin, Baracha, Liquidate and Denim, and Liquidate was first into the straight from Baracha, Denim, Lord Robin and Philary. The run’ home had not long been entered upon before Denim had Liquidated measure, and he went on for a comfortable win from the West Coaster, Liquidate, with Philary finishing on into a close third place. Baracha was next, in front of Aidair, Boon Companion, Kite High',. Swift Action and Victory Bells. A close tussle was staged in the Raukapuka Hack Handicap. Spiora and Leeston were abreast entering the straight from Deficiency, Denary, Stagestruck and Gay Fort. Leeston did not last long and Denary drew up to Spiora, with Deficiency joining in on the inside. In a hard tussle Denary gained a last stride victory from Spiora, with Deficiency a close third. There was then a gap to Gay Joy, with Here Hine, Temuka, Liquidate and Leeston next. Hansel and Temuka were last away. Trotting Events. The Geraldine Trot was run in two divisions. In the first Rural Lady went to the front after the first furlong and leading for the remainder of the journey was not called upon to have a decisive win. She was followed into the straight by Kahurangi, Coral Princess and Glenwellyn and the last-named finished on to gain second place from Kahurangi and Coral Princess. Snowflake went to the front shortly after the start of the second division and when she entered the straight clear of Tungsten Steel, Branford and Locknit she looked like having an easy win, but her driver appeared to be too easy on her inside the final furlong and Branford wore her 'down to beat her comfortably. Guidance, one of the last away, was a close third, in front of Tungsten Steel and Remlap. Scholarship was at a short price in the Orari Trot and leading all the way, won easing up. He was followed into the straight by Shadow Chimes, Lottie Jinks, Branfqrd and Special Effort, and in a close tussle for the minor placings Shadow Chimes beat Lottie Jinks and Branford with Special Effort, Lodestone and Firewater next. Although hot fast the ’ track was in good order and provided splendid going. The totalisator turnover of .£37,117/10/- represented an increase of £1702/I'o/- on last year’s figure of £35,415.
