A TEN-YEAR PLAN

WESTLAND’S DEVELOPMENT LINDER REVIEW SURVEY ALMOST COMPLETED A 10-year plan for the development of Westland, including communications, natural resources and rehabilitation projects, on the lines of-those already announced for other districts, is in the course of pre- ■ paration by the Government and, it is expected, will be announced within a month. It was stated to-day by the Minister of Labour, Mr O’Brien, that, although he was not in a position to disclose the details of the plan at this juncture, he was aware that .it embodied a big programme, including rail, road and sea communications, rehabilitation, forestry, river protection and the general development of Westland. The plan, said Mr O’Brien, would be published shortly and it was possible that the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, would visit the West Coast after the House of Representatives rose and personally discuss various aspects of the plan with representatives of local authorities. This, however, would depend upon Mr Semple’s other duties. The district Public Works engineer, Mr E. F. Evans, confirmed that much of the preliminary work in connection with the plan had been completed. He said that an officer from Wellington would collaborate with the department’s staff within the next week in the preparation of the detailed plans and schedules for the various jobs, the maiority of which had already been selected. i.. 12 •
