NAME OF GLACIER
SPELLING OF “FRANZ JOSEPH’’ ACCEPTED DECISION OF POST OFFICE Acting on the recommendation of the Geographical Society which has been conducting inquiries, the Post and Telegraph Department from now on will use the spelling Franz Joseph for Westland’s best-known glacier. The Department had previously used the spelling Franz Josef. It was brought to the notice of the society that when the name of the place formerly known as •Waiho Gorge was changed to its present designation, the spelling adopted by the Post and Telegraph Department was not altogether correct. Evidence was produced by the society to show that von Haast named the glacier Francis Joseph. Variations of this spelling were FraTiz Josef and Franz Joseph. After considering the evidence, the Geographical Society decided that the spelling that should be adopted was Franz Joseph. . He said that this was identical with the spelling adopted by the Austrian Emperor. It was also the spelling which appeared on a medal struck in 1873 at the Vienna exhibition.
