DROP IN EARNINGS
AUSTRALIAN WAGES DOWN BY 15 A WEEKLY REDUCTION IN OVERTIME (Rec. 11.35 a.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 20. The average male earnings in Australia have dropped from £6/18/weekly at the peak of the war to £6 3/7 in the first quarter’ of this year, according to the Commonwealth. Statistician. A fall of 10/- weekly occurred between the December quarter of last year and the March quarter of this year. The fall was due mainly to reduced overtime and the transfer of war workers to lower-paid civil jobs, and to the greater use of junior labour. Wages were still about 10/weekly higher than the 1941-42 average.
