“A HORSE GOING OFF”
WRITTEN INVITATION TO BET “MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE’’ (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. Thomas Nicholls, aged 44, a showman and salesman, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to a charge of causing a letter to be sent to Mr. O. Chapman, of Wairoa, inviting him to make a bet at Marton to-morrow. Senior-Detective Compton said the accused caused a number of letters to be sent to the Hawke’s Bay district to names taken out of a telephone directory. The letter, after saying that Chapman’s name had been given as that of a man who would have a bet if he “knew something,” said: “There is a horse going off at Marton on September 21. All I ask is that you send me £2. If. this horse should get beaten I will refund you your money, but I know now that I will not have to do that. If you are interested get in touch with me before September 17. Yours faithfully, J. J. Saul, Newtown Post Office.” “But he hasn’t given us the name of the horse,” commented Detective Compton. For the accused, Mr. W. J. Stacey said it was an out in a hotel bar. The accused- had been quite frank. He had received no money. , . ' _ Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., fined him £5-
