GENERAL NEWS MORE SEVERE PUNISHMENT REQUESTED

When the House of Representatives met to-day .Mrs. Ross.(Oppu., Hamilton) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister what steps 'he intends to take to see that those people who illtreat children are more severely punished. Mrs. Ross said it had been reported that several women’s organisations had approached the Prime Minister in order to adjust the position, but no action had yet been taken. Holmlea Sails for Greymouth. Three replacements for the crew of the s.s. Holmlea, which had been held up for three and a half days at New Plymouth as . the result of three seamen refusing to sail with her on Monday, arrived last night. Auckland’s Mayor, Mr J. A. C. Allum, is becoming the Dominion’s leading international matrimonial expert. Two recent letters received by him recently from husband-seek-ing Englishwomen have been augmented by a similar request from eight girl laboratory assistants of St. Agnes, Cornwall. Following the recent period of mild weather, pastures in the Grey Valley have come on well and are now in good order, according to Mr. J. R. fields instructor of the Department of Agriculture, Greymouth. Spring growth is most noticeable on nearly all properties. Autumn-sown pastures have recovered from earlier setbacks and are showing good progress, particularly where manures were applied.

Car Imports, The Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, has announced details of considerable increases in import licences for commercial vehicle chassis and unassembled motor-cars for the 1947 licensing period. The increases amount to 50 per cent, of the 1938 value of imports. The Minister said that the imports would be increased in the case of unassembled commercial vehicle chassis from the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States by 50 per cent. of. the value of imports of chassis from the same sources in 1938. The same measure would apply to unassembled motorcars, except that the increase would be 50 per cent, of the unassembled and built-up cars imported in 1938. Tribute to Health Camp.

The Glenelg health camp at Christchurch received an unsolicited testimonial yesterday afternoon when the father of a girl who had spent six weeks at the camp attended the annual meeting of the Westland Health Camp Executive to pay tribute to the work of the camp authorities. He stated that his child had suffered from malnutrition oyer a period of years and that making her eat the types of food she needed had been a difficult task. During her six-weeks stay at the camp she had gained 101 b in weight, had developed the habit of daily exercises, and learned to eat the foods necessary'to health. He thanked the' executive for sending his child to the camp, commended the work of the camp authorities, and wished, the health camp scheme every success in the future.
