AIRCRAFT OVERDUE
WRECKAGE OFF COAST OF NEWFOUNDLAND 49 PERSONS ON BOARD (Rec. 10.10 a.m.) ' NEW YORK, Sept. 18. * A Belgian plane carrying 37 passengers and a crew of seven is about 12’hours overdue in Newfoundland •from. Europe, and Coast Guard officials report that aircraft wreckage was sighted north-east of Gander, Newfoundland. The missing aircraft is a DC.4 belonging to the Belgian Sabena Conir pany. It left Shannon, Eire, late on Tuesday night. It is known that it was over Gander early this morning. Captain. Merrill, who was piloting an American airliner from Paris to New York, said his take-off from Gander was delayed 40 minutes because the Belgian aircraft was making radio contact with the • Gander control tower. A K.L.M. aircraft arrived at New York from Amsterdam, by-passing Gander because of rough_ weather.
