FOR WOMEN Institute Meetings
Greymouth The Greymouth Women’s Institute held its September meeting in the Lyceum Hall recently. Mrs Kilpatrick presided. The aspirations were read by Mrs Dodd. An invitation was received and accepted from the Runanga Women’s Institute to attend its eighteenth birthday party. The rollcall was an exchange of recipes. A demonstration of a rag mat on a frame was given by Mrs Hunter. A birthday cake was sent to sick members in hospital. Competition winners were as follows:—Best bloom, Miss Prendergast 1, Miss Cunliffe and Mrs Taylor equal 2; saucer of weeds, Miss Prendergast 1, Mrs Johnson 2; flourbag article, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Smart 2. Mrs Dodd and Miss Cunliffe were appointed visitors to sick members. The hostesses were Mesdames Booth, Aiderton and Dodd. Dobson The September meeting of the Dobson Women’s Institute was held lin the Dobson School on Monday. Mrs Batey presided over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the institute song and the aspirations were read by Mrs H. Peters. Several visitors were welcomed. The motto for the month was “A good deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little encouragement.” The sum of £l/1/- was sent to the Leper Fund. Mrs S. Smith gave a talk on several life-saving incidents with which she had been connected. Mrs E. Peters gave a demonstration of the making of sockettes. The competition, a pair of bootees, was won by Mrs Mellett. Mrs C. McPhie was second. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs Walker. Mrs Batey and Mrs H. Peters took part in a debate entitled “Modern dress versus old.” Supper was served and the meeting closed with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem.
