PREFERENCE ISSUE
CASE OF BRITISH SOLDIER IN AUSTRALIA APPLICATION REJECTED SYDNEY, Sept. 16. The Central. Preference Board has rejected an application by C. JI, Stephan, a former major in the British Army, for preferential treatment in obtaining employment under the Be-establishment and Employment Act. The board's decision will affect the position of many men in Australia who served with the British forces, and may influence immigration. The matter is regarded as a test case by the Returned Soldiers’ League, which is backing the claim. Stephan, who served with the British forces in Europe and the Pacific, was first refused preference in June, on the grounds that the act applied only to the war in which Australia was engaged, and not to the war ol the British Empire and her Allies. The Returned Soldiers’ League lodged an appeal with the High Court, which advised that the Crown accepted the wider meaning. ■ After the recent decision of the board, its chairman has refused to state the grounds on which the application was refused.
