GOVERNMENT BLAMES COMMUNISTS “MOPPING UP” COMPLETE LONDON, August 8. “Several thousand Greek troops, assisted by gendarmerie, light artillery, armoured units, and a few reconnaissance aeroplanes, have completed a week’s mopping-up operations against armed bands in , the area of Mount Olympus, in Southern Macedonia,” reports Reuter s correspondent in Athens. “Greek Government circles allege that the bands are sponsored by Communists and include many former members of the ELAS resistance movement, “The conclusion of the operations is regarded as having foiled a Communist attempt to provoke a state of anarchy on the eve of the plebiscite on the question whether King George shall return to Greece.”
