LABOUR CANDIDATES
TWENTY-EIGHT MORE NAMES ANNOUNCED MINISTERS’ ELECTORATES WELLINGTON, August.B. With an announcement to-night that the national executive of the New Zealand Labour Party has approved the nomination of a further 28 candidates for the 1946 General Election, the Party has now reached finality in regard to its candidates for 52 seats. The candidates are as follows:— Brooklyn.—The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. a Island Bay.—Mr R. McKeen, M.P. Miramar.—The Minister of Works, Mr Semple. Mt. Victoria.—Mr E. Casey, former general manager of Railways. Karori.—Mr P. C. P. McGavin, formerly of Hokitika. Hutt.—The Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. Petone.—Mr M. Moohan. Archhill.—The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry. Roskill.—Mr F. Langstone, M.P. Mt. Albert.—Mr A. S. Richards, M.P. Tamaki.—Mr T. E. Skinner. North Shore.—Dr. A. M. Finlay. New Candidates’ Careers. Mr. Casey joined the Railways service in 1902 and was general manager from 1940 to 1944. He was born in London and was educated at Napier and the Auckland University College. He has been prominent in sporting circles and a delegate to the New Zealand Rugby Union for a number of years. He was elected first president of the recently-formed branch of the Labour Party in the Mt. Victoria electorate. He is married, with four children. Mr. Moohan has been national secretary of the Labour Party for the past six years. He served in France in the first world war, migrating to New Zealand in 1923. He was first chairman of the Rehabilitation Board in 1944 and represented New Zealand at the Empire Labour Conference in London. He is married, with five children. Mr. McGavin is a barrister and solicitor practising in Wellington. He was born at Hokitika in 1917 and m 1940 graduated L.L.B. from Victoria University College. He served five and a half years in the R.N.Z.A.F. He is married, with two children. Mr. Granville was a prisoner of war in Germany for four years, being repatriated in May, 1945. He is 36 years of age and held the rank of captain before being posted to the reserve of officers last April. He is secretary of the Claudelands branch of the Labour Party and a member of the Hamilton R.S.A. Mr. Freeman is national vicepresident of the New Zealand Timber Workers Union and a member of the executive of the Auckland L.R.C. He is aged 45. Mr. Dixon had lengthy service with the R.N.Z.A.F. in Britain and later in the Pacific. He is at present a full-time student at the Auckland University College. Dr. Finlay is an Auckland barrister and solicitor. He contested the Remuera seat against Mr. R. M. Algie in 1943. He was previously private secretary to the Minister of Health. Mr. Capstick is a farmer in the Sanson district. He is aged 34, married with five children. He has been associated with the Labour Party for some years. Mr. Freer is a native of Auckland, aged 25 years. He is a former journalist and is also a qualified accountant. He is secretary of the Auckland Labour Youth League. Mr. Skinner is secretary of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee ad is a former Auckland Rugby League representative. Mr. Hill is a successful farmer in the Tauranga district. He contested the Tauranga seat in 1943. NATIONAL CANDIDATE FOR MATAURA (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, August 8. Mr. T. L. Macdonald, M.P. for Mataura, will contest the Wallace seat at the General Election as the official National candidate. The present member for Wallace, Mr. A.dam Hamilton, is retiring from political life. NATIONAL PARTY’S CHOICE FOR NELSON (P.A.) NELSON, Aug. 9. Mr. E. R. Neale, Mayor of Nelson, has been selected as the National Party candidate for the Nelson seat. There were gix nominees for the position.
