HORSES FOR MEAT

OVER 15,000 REQUIRED FOR UNRRA Between 15,000 and 20,000 horses will be needed to supply the 2000 tons of horsemeat sought in New Zealand by UNRRA for distribution overseas to help combat starvation; By an amendment to the Meat Act regulations it is now possible to slaughter horses in meat export slaughter houses and in abattoirs. Only one freezing company has so far shown interest in the scheme and experimental killings will take place in the next week. Large horses only will be killed, as medium and smaller horses will not provide the selected good quality boneless cuts of meat, which have to be of a minimum weight. Although the number of horses available for killing is not known, it is thought that sufficient surplus horses will be sent in to realise a large proportion of the requirements of UNRRA. Next season, if horsemeat is still needed, the number will be strictly limited. The killing of horses, besides providing meat for hungry people, will also provide inedible fats neatsfoot oil and hides, which are in short supply.
