South Canterbury Team

Proposed Extension of

Itinerary

It was resolved at last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby Union that the South Canterbury Union be asked if there. was any possibility of its representative team’s itinerary being extended to include a match against West Coast. It was pointed out in a letter from the Westland Sub-Union that South Canterbury would be visiting Westport for the Buller Union’s jubilee between September 20 and 22. The-sub-union suggested that the match be played at Hokitika if it could be arranged, but members said that the same suggestion had already emanated from Inangahua, suggesting Reefton as the venue of the game. It was decided, in the meantime, to ascertain whether or not the South Canterbury team’s tour could be extended. Those present at the meeting were Messrs. F. W. Baillie (chairman), M. R. Bunt, W. Blair, O. Scott, S. McDonnell, G. Nelson, R. Longstaff, and A. M. Jamieson. Permission was granted the Greymouth Technical High School first fifteen to play the Papanui Technical High School at Christchurch on Friday, August 16, and the second fifteen to play the Marist first fifteen on Wednesday, August 14. T. Mathieson (Blaketown) and V. Hahn (Celtic)'were reclassified from senior to junior grade. It was stated that these players had each played two senior matches when their re-, spective senior teams had been short of players. The South Westland Sub-Union, advised that its proposed seven-a-> side tournament had been postponed until September. A letter was received from the Maori Advisory Board inviting nominations for the Maori team to play the Australians. —The letter was referred to Mr. H. Mason. Arrangements for a team to visit Reefton on Sunday to play Inangahua were left to Mr. A. Agnew, with power to act. Advice was received that the annual primary schools’ tournament would be held at Blenheim between August 26 and 31. Members considered that the West Coast team’s travelling each way on a Sunday would prove expensive and decided to communicate with the Buller Union on the subject.

It was decided that a new senior one-round competition be commenced on Saturday, the Star-United match to be the first of the series.
