MURDER PLOT FAILS
ATTEMPT TO KILL BRITISH OFFICERS PALESTINE TERRORISTS JERUSALEM, August 6. “The Jewish Stern Gang last night organised an attempt to murder two senior British officers,” says an official announcement in Jerusalem. “The object of the terrorists is believed to have been to kill senior officers dealing with the trial of members of the Stern Gang who blew up the Palestine railway workshops in Haifa on June 18. “Their attempt was foiled because dogs barked in the garden of the officers’ quarters. One dog was hit four times by a machine-gun burst. A search of the area was unsuccessful.” The two officers were LieutenantColonel A. G. Campbell, DeputyAssistant Advo'cate-General, and Lieutenant-Colonel H. G. Niven.
At St. George’s Cathedral, Jerusalem, to-day, a memorial service was held for the 91 British, Arab, and Jewish victims, who perished in the King David Hotel outrage. The attendance included the General Officer Commanding in Palestine ( General Sir Evelyn Barker) and religious leaders of the Jews and Arabs.
