One in every four employees in Australia was a Commonwealth publie servant, said the Leader of the Opposition. Senator McLeay, in the Senate. He stated that Commonwealth employees at March 31 numbered 512,300, which was equal to 25.3 per cent? of the population. He urged that an independentcommittee should comb Government departments and transfer surplus employees to positions -where they could be more useful. Speaking on a motion to have the Treasurer’s financial statement printed, Senator McLeay charged the Government with being the most extravagant and. wasteful in the history of the Commonwealth Parliament. An amendment to extend child endowment to provide 7/6 weekly for the first child was lost by 17 votes to 12.
