LATE NEWS NEW SOUTH WALES COAL ALLOWANCE
(Rec. 3 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 6. The Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley, has refused to ■increase the New South Wales share o'f coal production. When a deputation of labour and union leaders asked him to provide more coal-for the New South Wales railways ..and industries to prevent an economic breakdown he i eplied that only increased production would enable New South Wales io get more coal. He promised to consider other union proposals, which the conference decided not to make public at present. . Last night the general secretary of the Miners’ Federation appealed to all miners to -step up production in return for benefits to be received by the Government Coal Bill. AUSTRALIAN~HURDLE RACE INQUIRY ; (Rec. 3 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 6. The stipendiary stewards have accepted the explanations of the parties concerned in the adjourned inquiry into Solvent’s running at. Caulfield on Saturday. Solvent, -a hot favourite, finished third to First Aid in the Australian Hurdle Handicap. The rider, W. Smart, told the stewards he had been hampered by a shoulder injury. _
