DEMAND FOR WOOL

UNEXPECTED DECREASE IN SURPLUS (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, Aug 5. Sales of wool in the 1945-46 season far exceeded expectations, says a statement issued by the United Kingdom Wool Disposals Board. The Wool Conference estimated that consumption would be 1,390,000, OOOlbs but sales, as distinct from consumption, totalled 8,000,000 bales or or 2,520,000,0001b5, equalling the entire production of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, plus 4,000,000 bales from stock. The stocks held by the joint organisation on June 30 totalled 1 968,000,0001bs instead of the estimated 3,165,000,0001b5. Features of the demand for Dominion wool during the season are the record total of the United States purchase—2,ooo,ooo bales—and the volume of the purchases of France and Belgium, whose textile industries have made a remarkably rapid recovery. _____________
