RAILWAY SMASH
100 CASUALTIES IN ACCIDENT NEW YORK, August 3. Many persons were injured, and carriages were turned into smoking twisted wreckage, when a packed train crashed into the rear of another passenger train from Bayonne, in New Jersey, last night. The crash was followed by an explosion in the locomotive, starting a fire, which impeded the rescue work. The trains were travelling in the same direction. One was just pulling out of the station after an unscheduled stop. The fireman on the rear train was killed. One hundred persons were hurt, half of whom were treated bn the spot., and were allowed to go home. About 50 were taken to hospital. Most of the injured were travelling in the rear coach of the leading train. Many pulled themselves through shattered windows, only to be enveloped in scalding steam.
