J FORCE WELFARE

PROVISIONS FROM NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 4. As a result of a plan now being put into effect by the authorities, the 5000 New Zealanders in the New Zealand Brigade in Japan will shortly be able to obtain provisions from their own country in their camp canteens. On a mission to purchase supplies, the Director of Army Canteens in Australia, Colonel W. D. Leonard, arrived by air from Sydney. Hitherto no such provisions have been sent direct from New Zealand, but all have gone from Australia, with the exception of tobacco and cigarettes, which have been supplied from England. Colonel Leonard said he hoped to procure here chocolates, biscuits, tinned foods. New Zealand beer, and toheroas. The idea was to let New Zealanders have a taste of something from their homeland. This, of course, had nothing to do with regular Army rations, but was for stocking canteens.

A ship would be sent from Australia about the end of September to load these and other Army supplies. ■ During his visit to New Zealand, Colonel Leonard, will also endeavour to arrange for supplies of clothing for male civilians in Japan attached to diplomatic staffs, and for the wives and children of soldiers of all British forces. He will leave for the south on Thursday.
