TURKISH PREMIER
RESIGNATION FOLLOWS ELECTION
HEAVY OPPOSITION VOTE (Rec. 2.10 p.m.) > 1 A ISTANBUL, August 4. Bey Sarajoglu’s Government unexpectedly resigned. President Inonu had asked Redjep Peker, who resigned from the Ministry of the Interior for health reasons in May, 1943, to form a new Cabinet. It is expected that not half of Bey Sarajoglu’s ministers will find places in the new Cabinet. The heavy voting for the opposition Democrat Party in the first free elections a fortnight ago is reported to have shocked the Government. The voting is regarded as a demonstration of the nation’s dissatisfaction with the internal policy, particularly the excessive living costs and restrictions. Prices have in some instances soared by 1000 per cent, above the 1939 levels.
