DUKE OF GLOUCESTER
RETURNING TO ENGLAND NEXT YEAR CANBERRA, August 2. The Governor-General (the Duke of Gloucester) will leave Australia on his return to England towards the end of January next year. The Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) said that this was being done at the request of the 1 King, so that the Duke could see His Majesty before he left for South Africa. During the King’s absence, the Duke would act as a Counsellor of State. Mr. Chifley said that when the Duke was appointed Governor-General if was understood that his tenure of office would be approximately two years. The Duke would 'have held office for two years on January 30 next.
