SHEEP SKIN SALES

REASONABLE SUPPLIES FOR

AMERICA WASHINGTON, August 2. The United States Commerce Department is seeking information on the agreement under which New Zealand is reported to have arranged to sell surplus sheep . and lamb skins exclusively to Britain. Leather interests pointed out that such an agreement would seriously disturb the’ United States tanning and shoe traders because the domestic supply of skins was insufficient.

Reasonable supplies of skins would still be available for the United States market, stated the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash), when this message was referred to him. He said that following the cessation of price control in America and operations of the International Allocation Committee and the Office of Price Administration, the New Zealand Government accepted an offer from the leather control authority in the United Kingdom to purchase all unsold pickled sheep and lamb pelts from the present season’s killing. The sale covered existing stocks and the remainder cf the killing for the present season, which would end on September 30. Proposals for future sales to fit in stabilisation policy would bo considwith New Zealand’s general price cred at a special conference of all held soon. Reasonable supplies in interested parties, which would be any case would still be available for the United States market.
