MIDNIGHT COLLISION IN

(Rec. 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1. Britain-bound, the United States ship, American Farmer, carrying a large cargo of food, sank after a midnight collision with another United States vessel, William J. Riddle, which was en route to America, 480 miles from the Irish coast; The last named vessel rescued six passengers and 50 of the crew who took to the lifeboats at the master’s orders. After transferring the rescued persons to another American ship she went on her way, at a reduced speed. The cargo of the American Farmer included 5500 tons of wheat, as well as evaporated milk, dried eggs and machinery. '
