FOOD IN AUSTRIA
POSSIBILITY OF FAMINE CONDITIONS LONDON, May 29. The chief medical officer to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration mission to Austria, Colonel J. D. Cottrell, 0.8. E., of Dunedin, is now in London for consultation with UNRRA headquarters. Colonel Cottrell said that the Austrians’ health had stood up very well so far to the short rations, but unless more can be done quickly famine conditions may follow. Present shipments were inadequate. Colonel Cottrell added that the infant mortality rate was now 134 for every 1000 live births, which was double the pre-war figure. The mild winter had aided the position in Vienna, but the present ration was only 1200 calories daily. The people were all under weight, hungry, and lethargic, but there had been no major epidemics.
