BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MAYOR AND NEWSPAPER CORRESPONDENT INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS Referring to Mr. R. P. Chibnall’s letter in the Evening Star on Tuesday, concerning the Town Hall, the Mayor of Greymouth, Mr. F. A. Kitchingham, stated to-day that arrangements would be made shortly to enable residents to become better informed on the various topics brought up from time to. time. “Many letters which have appeared in the newspapers,” he said, “have been based on wrong or no information, or have merely stated halftruths, and although the facts relative to such topics have periodically been published in reports presented to the council and reprinted in the newspapers, it is evident that many of the residents do not read these reports, or, owing to their condensed form, oi’ other reasons, do .not obtain a clear picture of the council’s policy, which has been to lead rather than to follow.”

The Mayor added that he and most of the councillors for the past 20 odd years had aimed at making Greymouth a place where people would be glad to live rather than the place it was .for so many years—a place to come to and make a competence and then get out as quickly as possible. *
