23,000 IN FORCES

NEW ZEALAND SEKVICES

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 23. The strength of the New Zealand armed forces, both in New Zealand and Overseas, amounts at the present time to approximately 23,000 men. This information was given to-day by the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones).

The Minister said there were approximately 6000 men in the Army in New Zealand, exclusive of some 4000 men being trained to replace the brigrade of 4000 now on occupational duties in Japan. In the Air Force there were 6000 in the Dominion and overseas, and in the Navy there weie some 3000, including men serving overseas. The Minister added that the first relief for J Force, consisting of approximately 2000 men, would sail towards the end of next month or at the beginning of June. They would be followed as soon as shipping permitted by the remainder of the relief.
