THREE MEN DROWNED AT RIVER MOUTH CAPSIZE OF BOAT (P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 22. _ Three men were drowned on Friday evening when their boat capsized at the mouth of the Taieri river. They were Mr. Ronald Davidson Hanson, aged 34; Mr. Bernie Hardie, aged 24; and Mr. Cyrus John Smith, aged 23, a married man. The three men had been shooting rabbits on Taieri Island and embarked to return to the mainland m a small, flat-bottomed boat. About half-way across the boat capsized, and Colin Hanson, a fourth member of the party, and the only one who could swim, told the others to cling to the boat while he swam for assistance. Against a strong wind and an ebbtide, the swim took 45 minutes, and when a launch reached the scene, there was no sign of the men or the boat.

ONE KILLED; FOUR INJURED (P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 22. Two motor accidents resulting in the death of one person and injury to four others occurred in Central Otago on Saturday. The fatal accident occurred on 'Fruitlands road about 7.45 p.m. when a motor-cycle ridden by David Toll, aged 20, of Clyde, collided with a car driven by Joseph Alej ander Murdoch, of Ohai. The motor-cyclist suffered injuries from which he died in the Clyde Hospital, yesterday. The second accident occurred shortly after midnight, when a three-ton truck driven by 'lvan Browning was returning to Alexandra with a party of young persons who had attended a dance at Earnscleugh. The truck capsized over a bank, and four of the passengers were admitted to the Clyde Hospital. They were:—Stanley Vincent Theyers, of Alexandra, serious head injuries; Margaret Sarah Campbell, of Alexandra, internal injuries; Hugh Hamilton Campbell, fractured rib; and Frederick Arnott, shock. GIRL KILLED BY TRAIN (P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 22. When she was caught by a southbound goods train on the Evansdale railway bridge on Saturday afternoon, June Goodwin, aged 18, of William street, Dunedin, was killed instantly. She was walking along the bridge with a girl companion about 3 p.m. when the train suddenly came round a bend and on to the north end of the bridge. Both girls ran towards the other end, but, while her companion was able to jump off the bridge into a small gully and escaped with minor injuries, Miss Goodwin fell on the decking of the bridge and was run over by the train. The body was badly mutilated. CYCLIST KILLED NEAR ISLINGTON (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 23. When he was involved in a collision with a motor-car on the Main South road, near Islington, about 11 p.m. on Sunday, a 59-year-old labourer, Samuel Wade, of 108 Ham road, Fendalton, was killed instantly. Wade was cycling towards Christchurch when the accident occurred. The motor-car was driven by Norman Tonkin, of Dunedin. YOUNG WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES (P.A.) GISBORNE, April 22. Thrown from a motor-cycle in a collision with a steer on the Gisborne highway, a young Maori woman was severely injured on Saturday and later died. The victim was Christina Mary Matenga, aged 19, a .student nurse at the Wairoa hospital. She was on the pillion seat of a motor-cycle ridden by Basil Mildon, of Wairoa, when the collision occurred. FOOTBALLER INJURED Slight concussion was received by George Moran, aged 28 years, a railway surfaceman, of Christchurch, while playing Rugby football for Marist (Christchurch) against Celtic at Greymouth on Saturday. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital and his condition to-day was reported to be satisfactory.
